Despite its cool, clear refreshing look, most water available in the backwoods today is not safe to drink unless treated. Various chemicals, bacteria, viruses and plain old mud can turn a simple thirst quencher into gut-wrenching time a few days later as the bugs make their way thru you.

Boiling water kills bacteria and viruses, but doesn't get rid of sediments or chemicals, and is inconvenient when on the trail. Filters remove most bacteria and sediments, but not all viruses. Iodine and chlorine have their own pros and cons too when used as standalone treatments.

However, if you are only going to use one treatment tool - at least in North America - a good quality, hand-pump filter is the best solution. Common trail wisdom says that a filter is all you need because viruses aren't the problem here in the States; bacteria are, and filters will catch most bacteria. The argument continues that viruses are only a significant problem in other countries - the infamous Montezuma's Revenge, for instance, that is encountered south of the border. I've never gotten sick drinking water that was only filtered, and not further treated. For more information on staying hydrated click here.

We carry a couple of different models, from Katadyn and MSR.  All are very popular and well reviewed, and very reliable out in the field, especially paired with one of our water bladders. They have few mechanical parts that can go wrong at the wrong time. You'll get good pump volume without a lot of pumping effort, for about 12 ounces added to your pack.

You should also throw in some coffee filters to add to the input side to extend the filter life and function while you're in the field. The coffee filter is a cheapie add-on that catches the big stuff before it makes its way to the filter core. Unless you are planning on providing water for an entire marching regiment with just one filter, you won't have to worry about filter clogging on your trip. We clean and rinse out the filters after every rental.

Water filters help eliminate the biggie problems like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which cause most hiker illnesses. However, these filters do not eliminate viruses. While viruses are statistically less of a problem, if you want more protection, buy some treatment tablets to add to the water after you've run it thru the filter.

Here are some other common-sense tips for using a water filter. Avoid filtering water in area where animal or human activity is obvious. As in, watch for horse crap at water sources along multi-use trails. Pump upstream from busy stream crossings. Avoid the temptation to filter from what appears to be clear rushing water. Instead, filter from still clear water sources. Many microorganisms tend to sink to the bottom of still water while a rushing stream keeps them suspended. Alternatively, rather than filter directly from the trail source, put water in a trail bucket and filter from that. This gives you a chance to see how the water looks before you send it through your filter. If the water is cloudy, let it sit for an hour or so, then pump from the clearest water off the top. Don't save the first few streams of output from your filter; let a few go thru first to clear out any old water in the line. When you clean or handle any part of the filter, recognize you are handling a potentially contaminated object. Don't handle food or put your hands to your mouth after cleaning your filter. Avoid letting the input hose and output hoses touch each other so the output end that will go into your water container isn't contaminated.

If there are several hikers in your party, not everyone needs a filter. We suggest one pump filter is enough for every two or three hikers. You could in theory handle lots more hikers than that, but after 3 or 4 people sharing, having a backup becomes a smart idea, and using just one pump for a lot of hikers starts to take a lot of time.

The filters are easy to use, but if you need a manual after it arrives, find those on the Katadyn or the MSR web sites. One last note - if we send you the Sweetwater model, we usually send along a wire brush cleaner along with it. It probably won't be needed at all, but if so, just a brief whisk in and out is all you need. Otherwise excessive brushing will ruin the filter cartridge, and you won't be happy with that.

Fun Dog Toy
Color: Classic Blue
This toy has been a lot of fun for our dogs. One of my dogs absolutely loves balls and is perfectly content to just carry this around in his mouth. The outer shell feels like a firm foam material. It is durable while still being lightweight enough for the dogs to enjoy. The ball screws together, but it is designed well enough that you are not constantly worried about it coming apart. You have to intentionally press and twist it to open it, so normal dog play has not caused any issues. Inside is the motorized component, which is easy to turn on and recharge. It offers a few different vibration modes, which keeps things interesting. The reactions from our dogs have been hilarious. One dog is convinced the ball might be plotting against him and keeps a suspicious distance. Another dog loves it so much that he holds it in his mouth while it vibrates, making his entire head shake. Our third dog plays with it exactly as intended, chasing it around and interacting with it normally. The motor has enough power to make the ball bounce, roll, and move unpredictably across the floor, which keeps the dogs engaged. It has been a great addition to our toy collection and provides a different kind of enrichment than a standard ball. Overall, the dogs really enjoy it.

A fun toy
Color: Classic Blue
Our Malamute loves this ball. He likes to carry it around with him and let it will out of his grasp and pick it back up. The outer ball it tough and durable, and so far it has held up well during play. It does bounces more than rolls I expected a little more movement across the floor in a more rolling fashion... like those weasel balls from the 90s, but tends to hop and bounce in place. It does works best on hard floor where it has enough contact to move around and keep the dog engaged. To charge you have to unscrew the ball in half to access the motor unit, and there is grease on the motor, so be careful when opening it and handling the internal piece. It is not difficult, but it is a little more complicated than a simple plug-in charging port. The button on is also super hard to press. I you have to really squeeze it and even use a tool to turn it on. It has 2 modes though it is so hard to press I am not sure which mode I actually turn on. It so far has been a fun toy for our young dog and has lasted our extreme chewer (only supervised play) I would recommend if it went on sale.

Works well on hardwood, and my dog is just a coward
Color: Classic Blue
This ball works really well on hardwood floors, rolling and moving around just like it's supposed to, though it struggles on carpet where the resistance seems to bog it down. I expected my dog to be thrilled by it, but instead he was afraid of the thing. In fairness, he's a big scaredy-cat by nature, so that says more about him than the toy. The ball itself feels very tough and well made. If he would actually work up the courage to chew on it, I suspect it would hold up extremely well, and I don't think he'd be able to pop it open on his own either. So it's a solid, durable toy that's earned my confidence, even if it hasn't yet earned my dog's.

Keeps puppy busy .. and busy .. and busy
Color: Classic Blue, Color: Classic Blue
My young Shih Tzu is all about "magic" balls. He seems to know what is in the box before it is even opened. The product page says this ball is not meant for small dogs. Well, my Shih Tzu puppy can't read. He is positively obsessed with HIS newest "smart" toy. Thankfully, this ball came with a partial charge so Bodhi could begin playing immediately. This toy is an improvement over Bodhi's previous chargeable balls with unpredictable movements. I really like that the power button is on the outside since it makes it easier than taking the halves apart every time. The toy functions on every surface (so far) and it is reasonably quiet. This item is also waterproof so it can be rinsed off easily after use. Fantastic interactive toy.

pelota interactiva para perros
Color: Classic Blue, Color: Classic Blue
