Blackberry - Tannins - Mineral

The García family have 22 hectares of land in the Contraviesa mountain range, on the southern face of the Sierra Nevada. Half of the property is dedicated to vines, the other half to organic almond and fig trees. Set between 1150 and 1400 metres above sea level, the slopes of the vineyard are more often than not far too steep for any type of machinery to traverse, so the family turn the soil each year traditionally using mules.

The soil here is mostly slate and other rocks, very low in organic matter but rich in minerals. Rainfall is low and the vines push their roots deep below the surface in order to reach water, sucking up minerals along the way. Despite its position in the south and having very little rainfall, proximity to the Mediterranean means that it doesn’t bake here, helping the wines maintain a certain freshness and balance.

The grapes for Tinto Cosecha are taken from 4 different plots between 1150 and 1300m above sea level. With no oak, Tinto Cosecha is young, fresh and mineral driven, juicy and fuller bodied with tannic heft, and reminiscent of the wild herbs that grow in abundance on the slopes all around the Alpujarras.

Grapes: Tempranillo (60%), Garnacha (40%)

Good Book, not Parshall though
Format: Kindle
The author uses more Japanese terms than any similar book that I've read but uses western naming conventions for Japanese people. I don't quite know what to think. Good diagrams.

Interesting front to back
Format: Hardcover
Really good book. A lot from the Japanese perspective. Plenty of facts but not so much as to be boring. Amazing how much was hit or miss back then. Or just plain luck.
