Second US edition of this highly readable travel book on Egypt and Libya, written by the English traveller and writer who lived in France. This is his first travel book. "As a traveller and observer he was a reliable social commentator; his personal reminiscences are written in an entertaining, often humorous style, and his scholarly research was thorough. His writings were particularly esteemed in France, his adopted home, and met with some success in both Britain and America" (ODNB). St. John had learned Arabic in Egypt and wrote several books on the country and the surroundings.
