Course Overview: First Responder (FR) + BC Scope of Practice

This comprehensive in-person course is designed for individuals seeking First Responder (FR) certification, plus the BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 update, which is required for licensing through BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) or employment in regulated emergency response roles in British Columbia.

The course follows national training standards set by the Paramedic Association of Canada, while integrating BC-specific scope of practice protocols into hands-on training.

Course Hours & Training Breakdown

First Responder (FR) + BC EMALB Scope of Practice

• First Responder Course: 40 hours teaching time
• Scope of Practice Schedules 1 & 2:
• 8 hours self-directed online component
• 16 hours in-person teaching time
• Total: 56 hours of classroom instruction (not including breaks)

To receive certification, participants must:

• Attend 100% of scheduled in-person sessions

• Successfully demonstrate all practical skills

• Pass two evaluated scenarios (1 trauma, 1 medical)

• Achieve 75% or higher on the final written exam

Certification Awarded:

• ✅ 3-Year First Responder (FR) Certification

• ✅ BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 Completion Certificate

• ✅ Digital certification issued upon successful completion

• 🔁 Recertification required every 3 years

After You Complete the Course: Licensing in BC

Once certified, you may apply for licensing with the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB):

Step 1: Request an EMALB license evaluation
Step 2: Pass your licensing exams (written and practical) within 12 months of course completion
Step 3: Submit your application to EMALB via the Government of BC EMALB website
