UFO: Afterlight borduurt voort op het verhaal van UFO: Aftershock. De mensheid is van de aarde verdreven en is een kolonie begonnen op Mars. De laatste contacten met Laputa, een ruimteschip dat in de buurt van de aarde rondzweeft, verlopen ook steeds minder en de kolonie is op zichzelf aangewezen. Natuurlijk nog niks aan het handje, totdat je er achter komt dat er ook nog andere wezens op de planeet wonen... Die allemaal een kopje kleiner gemaakt moeten worden! Gaanderweg zullen andere inwoners van de planeet zich bij je aansluiten en kun je hun technologieën gaan onderzoeken, om sterkere wapens en ammunitie te kunnen produceren.

UFO: Afterlight is een strategiespel waarbij het besturen van je basis een hele grote rol speelt. Iedere inwoner van je basis heeft één of twee specialiteiten die bepalen wat voor beroep ze gaan uitoefenen: soldaat, onderzoeker of ingenieur. Deze kwaliteiten kun je ontwikkelen door je bewoners te trainen of ze bezig te laten zijn met hun beroep.
