Onze koperen en metalen sieraden zijn van een onedel metaal gemaakt met daar over een dun laagje goud of zilver plaiting. De term plaiting kom van een speciale techniek, elektro plaiting, dat wordt toegepast door stoom waardoor de kleur zich hecht aan dit materiaal. Het laagje zilver of goud blijft beter zitten afhankelijk van het gebruik van het sieraden. Maar wordt ook beïnvloed door pH-waarde van de huid, contact met cosmetische en chemische middelen of lang contact met water.
