ABOUT THE ART
Mason Storm’s 'Banksy Revealed' is a tongue-in-cheek exploration of myth-making, anonymity, and the spectacle surrounding one of the world’s most elusive artists. Presented as a sensational “exposé,” the artwork humorously stages a dramatic unmasking: a spray-can-wielding figure with the head of a chimpanzee, flanked by rats—iconic characters both in Storm’s visual world and in Banksy’s.
By using collage-style text blocks reminiscent of ransom notes or tabloid headlines, Storm mimics the aesthetic of scandal and conspiracy, poking fun at the endless public fascination with discovering Banksy’s true identity. The urban alleyway setting reinforces the gritty, graffiti-infused environment that typically houses Banksy’s work, yet the absurdity of the imagery undercuts any pretense of revelation, underscoring the futility of trying to decode an artist who thrives on mystique.
Storm’s satirical approach highlights the performative nature of both street art and celebrity culture. By portraying the “artist” as a chimp—an animal often used in art history and literature to symbolize imitation, experimentation, or human folly—he calls attention to the ridiculousness of assigning a single face or persona to a figure whose power lies in remaining unknown. The rats, another nod to Banksy’s signature motifs, playfully blur the boundaries between homage and parody, reinforcing that this scene is less about exposing truth and more about celebrating the mythology that has grown around Banksy’s name.
Released for Mason Storm’s 2010 event at Warehouse 45, the poster also reflects the artist’s broader interest in social commentary and media manipulation. 'Banksy Revealed' doesn’t aim to answer the question of who Banksy is—rather, it reveals how much the public wants to believe in any answer offered to them. Through humor, misdirection, and exaggerated theatrics, Storm transforms the mystery into the message itself, inviting viewers to enjoy the spectacle while recognizing the illusion behind it.
