Growing Queeny Purple Hollyhock Garden Seeds

  • Taxonomy: Alcea rosea
  • Other Names: Common Hollyhock
  • Seed Type: Perennial
  • Sow Indoors or Outdoors: Hollyhock generally grows so hardy and vigorously that there is little reason to start seeds indoors. Sow directly after final frost in a sunny spot at the north end of the garden and shelter from strong winds. However, for earliest blooming, start Queeny Purple Mixture seeds indoors 10 – 12 weeks prior. Hollyhock seeds can be slow to germinate and may require 21 – 28 days with full lighting. Early plants may need staking in addition to wind protection. Plants will easily reseed each season.
  • Days to Maturity: 2nd year maturity
  • Hardiness Zone: 3 – 8
  • Planting Depth: Plant 2 – 3 seeds ¼” deep
  • Plant Spacing: 12 – 24”
  • Growth Habit: 18 – 36” tall upright with a 12 – 24” wide spread of 3 – 4” feathered “powder puff” blooms
  • Soil Preference: Average, medium moisture, well-drained
  • Light Preference: Full sun
  • Diseases/Pests/Troubleshooting: Hollyhock is drought tolerant but avoid overhead watering to minimize wetting foliage as Queeny Purple Mixture is susceptible to molds, mildews, rust, leaf spots, and rot if not properly ventilated. No serious pests but monitor regularly for spider mites and Japanese beetles.
  • Color: Shades of fuchsia, pink, rose, and magenta

Queeny Purple hollyhock is a 2004 All-American Selection Flower Winner noted by AAS judges for its “prolific first year flowering” and “season-long” color.” Alcea rosea, or most commonly known as Common Hollyhock, is native to many temperate expanses in Asia and Europe. In Japan, hollyhock is called aoi (葵) and has been an important symbol in Japanese history and culture. It was incorporated as the official seal of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the flower still holds an important place in modern Japanese culture. During the Victorian era, the hollyhock symbolized both “ambition” and “fecundity” in the famous Language of Flowers.

Wide and flexible
Size: 18-24 Months Toddler, Color: White
Very cute I love the width and flexibility of the shoe 18 to 24 month is a bit too big for my 18 month old and she generally wears a size 6 1/2 shoe. I’m going to try the smaller size.

Don’t buy
Size: 12-18 Months Infant, Color: Navy
Cute little shoes but I would not recommend people buy these. The elastic broke on both shoes within a month. And they cannot get even a tiny bit of water on them. (Which is impossible with a toddler) If they do get wet the bottoms become dangerously slick. I wanted to get nice little barefoot shoes that I could use as hand-me-downs for future kiddos but these were not it. Horrible quality and not worth the money.

Quality control?
Size: 6-12 Months Infant, Color: Navy, Size: 6-12 Months Infant, Color: Navy
These were true to color (in blue) and are a cute design, however we received a pair that was oddly mismatched size-wise. They were both 6-12mo, however one moccasin was visibly larger and wider than the other. They were both too big for my 7mo old, but even when he'd grow into one the other would be much too large so we returned. Too bad because these would have been perfect if the quality control was there.

Amazing first shoes
Special Size Type: Toddler (1-4 Years), Size: 18-24 Months Toddler, Color: Matthew Navy
These are a fantastic in between option for after moccs and before hard sole shoes. Research shows that barefoot is best for foot development, but living in AZ the ground is way too hot for Moccs in the summer. These are a great compromise since we don’t want to use hard soles for as long as possible. Love this brand and these sandals are so cute!
