(Also known as Tongue Coral, Carpet Coral, or Slipper Coral)

Overview

The Tongue Hard Coral (Polyphyllia sp.) is a unique and visually striking large-polyp stony (LPS) coral, named for its elongated, tongue-shaped body and fleshy, carpet-like surface covered with small, waving polyps. Typically found in shades of tan, brown, green, or grey, many specimens develop fluorescent highlights under actinic lighting, creating a subtle yet captivating display. The coral’s free-living nature and undulating movement across the substrate make it a fascinating addition to reef aquariums. Hardy, adaptable, and peaceful, Polyphyllia is suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists seeking a distinctive bottom-dwelling coral.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Maldives. Commonly found on sandy reef flats, lagoon floors, and lower reef slopes, where it lies unattached and moves slightly with water flow.

Feeding

The Tongue Coral is photosynthetic, deriving most of its energy from zooxanthellae in its tissue. It also benefits from supplemental feeding to promote growth and coloration. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Mysis or finely chopped seafood
  • Marine plankton or LPS coral foods
  • Coral pellets or powdered blends

Feed when tentacles are extended (usually at night or under reduced flow).

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting. Provide diffused illumination from LED, T5, or hybrid systems.

  • PAR range: 75–150 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Avoid strong, direct light which can cause bleaching or tissue retraction.
  • Blue-spectrum lighting enhances fluorescence and subtle coloration.
Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, variable currents help keep the coral free of debris without disturbing its position. Too much flow may prevent the tissue from expanding fully or cause damage to its soft underside.

Placement
  • Place on the sandy substrate or a flat, open area of the aquarium floor.
  • Do not wedge or glue to rockwork — Polyphyllia is a free-living coral and can slowly move to find suitable conditions.
  • Allow 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of space between neighbouring corals to avoid stings or crowding.
  • Avoid sharp rock edges beneath the coral, which can damage its soft tissue.
Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef-safe fish (gobies, tangs, wrasses, clownfish, etc.)
  • Shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs
  • Other non-aggressive LPS or soft corals

Avoid:

  • Aggressive corals (e.g., Galaxea, Euphyllia, Hydnophora) in close proximity
  • Butterflyfish, large angelfish, or puffers that may nip the coral’s fleshy surface
Aggression

Peaceful.Polyphyllia has weak defensive tentacles and is easily damaged by aggressive neighbours. It does not actively sting other corals, making it an excellent community LPS.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. The Tongue Coral is hardy and adaptable but requires stable water chemistry and gentle handling. It’s ideal for aquarists looking to add a unique, bottom-dwelling LPS coral to their reef system.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm
  • Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres (25 gallons) for small specimens; larger systems preferred for mature colonies

Consistent calcium, alkalinity, and nutrient stability will ensure long-term health and colouration.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Tongue Hard Coral adds an organic, natural feel to reef aquariums. Its unusual shape and movement make it a standout piece on the sandbed, while its peaceful nature ensures compatibility with a wide variety of tank mates.

Interesting Fact

Unlike most corals, Polyphyllia corals are mobile — capable of slowly moving across the substrate using their soft tissue and subtle water pressure changes to reposition themselves for optimal light and flow.

Love these socks!
The wife struggles with socks. She only like the Nike ones, then they discontinued them, so had to start the search again! Found these, they are expensive just like the Nike, but the size is true, they look great, they are super soft and stretchy. They are light weight and breathable and seem to wick away moisture. She loves these!

TOO SMALL
Size: Medium, Color: Blue
Nice socks, but they are way too small. Says they fit size 6 - 10. I kept 3 ( I wear size 8) and gave 3 to my daughter (size 8.5). We both agreed that they were just too small.
