Overview

Precellys® 24 Touch is the ideal lab homogenizer to prepare any kind of biological sample, from the softest to the hardest, regardless of its origin (animal tissues,plant tissues, microorganisms…). It can treat up to 24 samples at a time and has been validated on more than 1,500 different samples: from brain, muscle and heart samples, to very hard material such as bones, hair and seeds. The intuitive touchscreen interface of Precellys® 24 Touch makes it really easy to use. Thanks to its exclusive vacuum-based tube locking system and its specific design, Precellys® 24 Touch is compliant with safety requirements of the harshest lab environments, such as BSL3. With its powerful figure-8 multi-directional motion, Precellys® 24 Touch provides high energy to the beads contained in the tubes, allowing the homogenization of the samples in a few seconds (~30 sec) at speeds ranging from 4000 to 6800 rpm. Samples can then be processed for further analysis amongst a wide variety of techniques dedicated to DNA/RNA (PCR, electrophoresis, NGS, chips, etc), protein (blotting, mass spectrometry, etc.), or metabolites analyses (chromatography, etc.).

The Precellys utilizes a figure-8, multi-directional motion which conveys a very high kinetic energy to the beads, causing intense collisions which break apart samples.  In many homogenizers, mechanical impacts between beads or between beads and the sample can generate heat. With the Precellys 24, the homogenization process is so fast that the temperature does not reach denaturation levels.

The Precellys has established protocols and various consumables for the processing of soft tissues, hard tissues, or microorganisms.  Users can simply change the speed and beads to accommodate a number of applications, such as:

• Dry grinding
• Micronisation
• Homogenization from fresh or snap-frozen tissues
• Lysis of micro-organisms
• Dissociation of living bacteria

The Precellys has been designed specifically for biological sample preparation.  Processing space is sealed off from the mechanical parts preventing any inside contamination, and individual sealed tubes prevent cross contamination between samples.  Once your protocol is validated, the sample preparation process remains exactly the same with no variability.  The Precellys was specifically developed and designed to be used in a BSL3 laboratory under high throughput conditions: 50 to 100 runs per day.

A 1-year warranty is standard with the Precellys.  Extended 2-year or 3-year warranties are optional.  For each additional year of warranty, a maintenance kit is provided which includes 2 vacuum joints, 1 anti-rotation tubing kit, and 1 containment seal.

FAQ

What are the primary differences between the Precellys 24 and the Precellys Evolution?

There are three main differences:

1. ​Power. The Precellys Evolution has almost 50% higher max RPM than the Precellys 24.
2. Flexibility with regards to sample size. The Precellys 24 holds 24x 2ml tubes. The Precellys Evolution also comes with an adapter that does the same, but there are additional, optional adapters that hold either 12x 7 ml tubes or 6x 15 ml tubes, allowing processing of larger samples.
3. If you're interested in keeping samples cool, the Cryolys cooling unit is much better for the Precellys Evolution. The Cryolys for the Precellys 24 is a standalone item which takes up about an equivalent amount of bench space to the Precellys 24 and requires a compressed air connection (or house pressurized air). The Cryolys for the Precellys Evolution is a relatively small "cap"-like device which sits on top of the Precellys Evolution so it doesn't take up any additional bench space and it does not require an air hookup.

 ... and of course there's the cost difference.

What are the safety features of the Precellys 24 which make it suitable for BSL-3 labs?

1. Top and pressure alarm: If the lid is not securely closed or the blocking plate is not placed correctly on the tube holder to lock the samples in place, the unit will not start the run.
2. Compatibility with vaporized hydrogen peroxide decontamination (see picture below). Vaporized H2O2 can be used to decontaminate the unit in case of tube breakage.
3. Containment seal which isolates the homogenization chamber from both the external environment and the internal mechanical parts.
