This finely wrought snake commemorates the passing of a husband and wife -- Lady Elizabeth Whitbread in 1846 and Samuel Whitbread in 1815. Samuel Whitbread was a renowned English politician whose father ran a successful brewing company. Lady Elizabeth Whitbread was the daughter of Charles Grey, 1st Early Gray who was the commander-in-chief of the British forces during the Revolutionary War.
This 14k gold pendant is accented with an etched black enamel snake with tiny rose cut eyes surrounding a carved banded agate forget me not flower encircled by lustrous half pearls.
The back features the engraving 'Samuel Whitbread, born Jan y 18, 1764. died July 6, 1815; Lady Eliz th Whitbread, born April 7, 1765, died Nov r 28, 1846."
The piece is in very good condition and measures 1.35 inches from top to bottom by 0.7 inches wide.
