Design doesn't have to complicated, which is why this guide to human-centered design shows that usability is just as important as aesthetics.Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door.
The fault, argues this ingenious -- even liberating -- book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization.
The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time. The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how -- and why -- some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Poorly Packaged
Scent: Almond Cocoa Butter
The soap is fine. The lotion seems thinner than what I have ordered in the past, but it will do. I've gotten the impression that Greenwich Trading is no longer making the Almond Cocoa version, so no doubt the stock is not new, which probably explains the viscosity. I was expecting that to be the case, so I'm not complaining about the lotion. The reason I'm writing this review is to ask the seller, JumpStart Goods, to make sure that Amazon packages the bundle of bottles in a box. The bottles were packaged together in a very thin (crisp and easily ripped) plastic bag. Then someone--the seller or Amazon--put the plastic-wrapped bundle in a thin Amazon pouch (one of those thin white and yellow envelope-like pouches) and expected it to endure the shipping process. Of course it didn't! When the envelope arrived, the bottles, which had broken out of the plastic bag, were rattling around inside the Amazon pouch, and the pump on the lotion bottle had broken. Fortunately, there was no leak, and I can put the lotion in an almost-empty bottle of the lotion that I already have--in other words, use it as a refill. I also need to mention that the package was held up several days in shipping. I assume that folks at UPS had noticed some issues with the package and had done their best to rectify the situation. Ironically, the same day that this envelope arrived, another Amazon order arrived in a secure box. That order was a tiny 1-inch paint brush. At least a hundred 1-inch paint brushes, or a bundle of soap and lotion, could have fit in that box!
