INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Inspect & Service Air & Liquid Cooling Systems in Vehicles & Machinery course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in preparing, inspecting, testing, servicing, adjusting, reporting on and finalising air and liquid cooling system work in vehicles and machinery according to workplace instructions, manufacturer service information, safety requirements and environmental procedures.
Air and liquid cooling system inspection and servicing involves preparing work from workplace and manufacturer information, identifying hazards and controlling risks, selecting serviceable tools and materials, working safely around hot pressurised systems, rotating components and coolant additives, inspecting system components, testing cooling system condition and performance, carrying out required servicing, and managing fluids, waste and final workplace requirements. This work is important because cooling systems help maintain correct operating temperatures, protect components from overheating or damage, support reliable operation and ensure fluids and waste are handled safely and responsibly.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to prepare cooling system inspection and servicing tasks; identify hazards, manage risks and apply safety controls; select and check tools, equipment and materials; apply WHS and OHS procedures for hot pressurised systems, rotating fans, belts, pulleys and coolant additives; manage trapping, storage and disposal of released fluids; inspect air and liquid cooling systems against manufacturer specifications; compare results with workplace expectations; report findings and repair or adjustment recommendations; identify liquid, marine, specialised and air cooling components and operations; test coolant concentration, transient voltage and pressure; service and adjust cooling systems; and complete post-service testing, final inspection, documentation, tool storage, housekeeping, waste disposal and recycling.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can safely and effectively inspect and service air and liquid cooling systems in vehicles and machinery by preparing work tasks, controlling risks, using suitable tools and procedures, inspecting components, interpreting results against manufacturer and workplace requirements, completing testing and servicing activities, reporting required repairs or adjustments, and finalising documentation, storage, housekeeping, disposal and recycling processes.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
This course assessment is based on the following topics:
1. Preparing cooling system inspection and servicing tasks from workplace instructions and manufacturer service information.
2. Identifying cooling system hazards, managing risks and applying safety controls during inspection and servicing.
3. Selecting, checking and confirming the serviceability of cooling system tools, equipment and materials.
4. Applying WHS and OHS procedures when working with hot pressurised cooling systems.
5. Applying safe work procedures around rotating fans, belts, pulleys and coolant additives.
6. Managing environmental requirements for trapping, storing and disposing of fluids released from cooling systems.
7. Inspecting air and liquid cooling systems according to manufacturer specifications, workplace procedures and safety requirements.
8. Comparing cooling system inspection results with manufacturer specifications and required workplace expectations.
9. Reporting cooling system inspection findings and recommendations for necessary repairs or adjustments.
10. Identifying the function and operation of liquid cooling system components, including water pumps, thermostats, radiators, caps, hoses, sensors and gauges.
11. Identifying the function and operation of marine and specialised cooling components, including heat exchangers, keel cooling, raw water cooling and sacrificial anodes.
12. Identifying the function and operation of air cooling system components, including cooling controls, fans, fins and cowlings.
13. Testing cooling systems through coolant concentration testing, transient voltage testing and pressure testing.
14. Servicing and adjusting cooling systems through system cleaning, coolant replacement, coolant additive adjustment and cooling system bleeding.
15. Conducting post-service testing, final inspection, workplace documentation, tool storage, housekeeping, waste disposal and recycling processes.
