The Naniwa P-306 Professional (Chosera) #600 Stone is aggressive enough to do fine repairs but fine enough to transit to a 2K/3K stone.
Ryky decided to test the Naniwa Pro #600 because of how much he enjoyed the Naniwa Pro #800, which is still his favorite non-soaking sharpening whetstone. The #600 is a different beast than the #800 - it is more aggressive and faster cutting than other #500-700 grit whetstone he has tested.
Being such an aggressive whetstone, it can also serve as a fine repair whetstone for minor chips. Ryky did find that going directly from this whetstone to 6K takes longer to clean up the edge, so if this a whetstone you end up getting, consider a 2K or 3K whetstone.
Due to the wear speed, Ryky does not recommend this whetstone as a daily sharpener, and should be reserved for very dull knives, or knives with very minor chips on the cutting edge.
Made in Japan
Spec:
- Origin: Osaka, Japan
- Grit No.: #600 WA
- Type: Splash & Go
- Dimension: 210 x 70 x 20mm (8.2 x 2.7 x 0.7")
- Weight: 794g (28oz)
- Abrasive: white aluminium oxide
- Cohesive agent: magnesium-bound
How to use:
This is a non-soaking whetstone, but can absorb a lot of water on the surface during the first use, so 1-2 minute soak will aid when first using the whetstone. Afterwards, simply apply water on the surface when ready to use. Rinse and wipe dry with a hand towel when done, and allow air dry at room temp. Do not leave in water.
How to clean:
If the stone’s performance is slowing down, or seems to be diminishing, you can clean using a rust eraser, nagura stone, dressing stone, or a flattening plate. Be sure to clean the entire surface of the whetstone when using any of these methods to ensure even wear of the whetstone’s surface.
