In the village of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg is run by the Mugneret sisters, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée, who are the third generation of the family. They make their small-production, highly sought-after Pinot Noir wines from around eight hectares (twenty acres) of vineyards, with nine different appellations.
The domaine was established in 1933 by Jeanne Gibourg and her husband, André Mugneret. Their only son, Georges Mugneret, worked as an ophthalmologist in Dijon, yet he was passionate for his family’s domaine and winemaking, adding parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée to its holdings. After his death, in 1988, Jacqueline, his wife, continued to operate the domaine with her daughters, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée. Until 2008, the domaine labeled the wines based on the original vineyard ownership—as either Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg or Domaine Georges Mugneret—and thereafter as Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg.
The vines are farmed sustainably. The grapes are picked by hand, sorted to include the best bunches only, and fully destemmed. The grapes undergo a cold maceration for four to five days, and alcoholic fermentationfor about ten days in vat. After pressing (with a pmeumatic press), each cuvée is transferred to oak barrels of various ages in the domaine's cellars and matures for about 18 months, with racking (a process of moving the young wine from one cask to another, leaving behind the lees and sediment). Each appellation is then blended. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and they are bottled at the domaine.
