Livial Description
Livial is a non-hormonal tablet used as hormone replacement therapy for women who have gone through menopause.
It's appropriate to use if you haven't had a period for a year or more.
It contains tibolone, which is converted to help restore hormonal balance.

What is Livial?

Livial is a type of HRT used to manage menopausal symptoms. It's also used as a secondary option for treating osteoporosis, which can occur within the first few years after menopause begins.

Livial, also known as Tibolone, is the active ingredient in the tablet. It's a treatment specifically for postmenopausal women who haven't had a period for at least a year.

How does Livial work?

It works by mimicking oestrogen and progesterone, the natural female hormones found in the body.

Livial is a bit different from combined HRT treatments like Indivina and Evorel Conti, or oestrogen-only options like Estradot, because it doesn't have actual oestrogen and progesterone hormone replacements. Instead, your body converts the active ingredient, tibolone, into these hormones.

During menopause, your body's oestrogen levels decrease, which can lead to symptoms like vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, difficulty sleeping, hot flushes, night sweats, and feelings of depression or anxiety. Tibolone, the active ingredient in Livial, helps to replenish the oestrogen and manage these symptoms.

What’s the difference between Tibolone and Livial?

Tibolone is the generic form of Livial, the branded medication, and it functions the same way in the body. The only differences might be in the packaging and the appearance of the tablets.

Since it's a generic product, it's typically more affordable than Livial. It may also have different inactive ingredients, such as the film coating on the tablet. However, the two medications are essentially the same in terms of their active components.

If I miss a Livial dose, what should I do?

If you miss a Livial tablet and remember within 12 hours of when you were supposed to take it, just take it as soon as you can. If it's been more than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

You should never take two tablets to make up for a missed dose, as this can lead to severe nausea and vomiting.

How long does it take for Livial to work?

HRT medication typically takes a few weeks to start easing your menopausal symptoms, and it may take a bit longer to reach its full effectiveness.

Our clinician will typically suggest waiting three months to see if the treatment is working as it should. During this period, the dosage may be adjusted. It might require a bit of patience, but you'll likely see results in the end.

Livial ingredients: how are they different from other HRT treatments?

Most HRT medicines include a synthetic form of oestrogen, and sometimes a synthetic form of progesterone as well. These hormones are naturally made by the body and help regulate the menstrual cycle, which in turn can ease menopause symptoms.

Livial is unique because it contains tibolone. When tibolone is processed in the body, it produces oestrogen. So, while it's not exactly a hormone replacement therapy, it functions in a similar manner.

Is Livial suitable for the perimenopause?

Livial isn't given to address symptoms of the perimenopause, which are the symptoms you may experience while going through hormonal changes at this stage of life.

This medication is only prescribed for treating postmenopause, which means you haven't had a period for at least 12 months. Unlike other hormone replacement therapies, you don't need to take progesterone with it, as it doesn't raise the risk of cancer if you haven't had a hysterectomy.

Does Livial cause weight loss or weight gain?

Weight gain and bloating are some of the more common side effects of taking Livial.

but only a small number of patients mention it. Weight loss is seldom reported, though it does happen occasionally.

So, what do we know about weight changes when taking tibolone? It's a bit unclear, but there's solid evidence indicating that weight changes are more likely linked to menopause itself, rather than being caused by the medication.

If you're worried about any changes in your weight, contact our clinician for advice.

Is Livial suitable if you’re over 60?

Women over 60 can use Livial, provided there aren't any other factors that could make it unsafe. These factors might include other medications that interact with Livial or health conditions, whether they are related to menopause or not.

Livial has been linked to a small rise in the risk of strokes and heart disease in women over 60.

although these risks are quite low. On the other hand, it's believed that taking it for a longer period may reduce the chances of bone fractures and breast cancer in women.

If you're worried about side effects or potential health risks with Livial, feel free to send a message to our clinician.

What is Livial 2.5mg?

Livial comes in just one dosage of 2.5mg. If you have trouble tolerating it, your doctor might suggest trying a different type of HRT.

There are various types of HRT available, tailored to the stage of menopause you're experiencing. There are also different doses to suit your personal needs. With guidance from our clinician, we can help you find the one that suits you best.

Can Livial cause depression?

Depression and mood changes are uncommon side effects of Livial, so it's important to be aware of them before starting the medication.

Conversely, research has indicated that Livial can also help alleviate depression symptoms linked to menopause.

Honestly, there's no way to predict exactly how someone will respond to a medication. It's important to understand the risks linked to your treatment, but it's unlikely that taking Livial will cause you any problems with depression.

Livial isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know when using it.

Here's all the official information on it. If you find anything confusing, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.

Heavy duty rubber bone
This bone is really heavy duty. It's got a groove down the middle of you you can put your pups favorite lickable treat. My 36 lb aussie enjoyed chewing on this and was nibbling the ends. This bone has held up to her chewing it with only a couple little pieces coming off.

Big hit with my super chewer.
Here’s an expanded, Amazon-friendly version that keeps a natural, human tone while adding helpful detail: This is a truly heavy-duty chew bone and a great option for aggressive chewers. The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the package was the weight. It’s solid and well made, so it definitely feels like it’s built to last. Because of that, I would recommend being mindful when handing it to your dog and avoiding tossing or dropping it on hard floors or toes. My dog, Yukon, was instantly thrilled with it. From the moment I gave it to him, he’s been carrying it around proudly and settling in to chew on it for long stretches of time. It’s kept his attention much better than lighter chews, and it’s holding up well to his strong jaws so far. I also love that it provides great enrichment and gives him a safe, satisfying outlet for his chewing instincts. Overall, this chew bone has been a big hit in our house. If you have a powerful chewer and are looking for something durable that will actually keep them engaged, this is a solid choice. I’m very glad I picked it up for Yukon and would recommend it to other dog owners with heavy chewers.

Immediate Hit With My Power Chewer!
Immediate hit. Like, didn’t even make it fully out of the package before my dog was sniffling around the package, all excited. I have a serious chewer, the kind that treats most toys like a personal challenge. This one has actually held up. It’s firm and tough, but not rock hard like those nylon bones that make me nervous about teeth. There’s a little bit of give to it, which I like. The beef flavor must be legit because he keeps going back to it. This isn’t one of those toys that gets ignored after five minutes. He’s been happily gnawing on it and hasn’t managed to destroy it yet, which honestly says a lot in this house. I also like the shape and texture. It’s easy for him to hold, and the ridges seem to keep him engaged longer. Bonus points if it’s helping his teeth even a little, because chewing is already his favorite hobby. No toy is truly indestructible, but this has definitely earned its place in the “worth buying again” category. If you’ve got a medium to large dog who lives to chew, this one’s a solid win.

Great Chew Toy for Destructive Dogs
I got this toy for our lab/pit mix, who tends to destroy most chew toys. He seems to really enjoy it so far, preferring it over his other toys. I'm not sure if it’s just the novelty of a new toy, or whether he actually likes the "real beef flavor," but either way, he's definitely into it. I’ve noticed some small teeth marks in the rubber, but nothing that concerns me too much at this point. My kids thought it looked pretty gross when I first pulled it out, which always makes me laugh! Overall, I'm very satisfied with the toy’s performance so far. It seems durable and I hope it lasts a long time--based on how things are going, I think it will. It's definitely worth the price.

Unusual looking, but durable and the pup likes it.
From the moment I took the box containing this toy out of its shipping box, my dog went nuts. He was not going to wait and had to have it NOW. Clearly the scent was quite appealing (if you’re a dog). He’s had it for a week now and he continues to enjoy it. This “meat bone” may not look appetizing to us, but my pup chews it regularly. The grooves and ridges seem to be interesting to him, and likely help with his dental health. The bone has held up quite well so far. My dog is an aggressive chewer and this one remains in good shape. Unlike plastic ones that leave a lot of sharp pieces all over - this one stays intact. Recommend.
